Each year at Misericordia, we are thankful for the generosity of our donors who contribute to the Misericordia Fund. Gifts made to this area are unrestricted, which means they provide support where it is most needed in any given fiscal year. Spring break service trips, the maintenance of sporting venues, visits from world class scholars and performers, state-of-the-art facility upgrades, and student scholarship aid are all commonly supported by annual giving.
On August 15, 1924, the Sisters of Mercy established Luzerne County’s first four-year institution of higher learning, College Misericordia, on nearly 100 acres of land in Dallas, Pennsylvania, which were purchased by the Sisters for this purpose in 1914. The first class of 37 students began their studies sharing the sisters’ motto: “Mulier Fortis,” representing valiant women trained in scholarship and spirituality.
Now, a coeducational Catholic University, Misericordia has made extraordinary strides while actively maintaining its original ideals and integrity. Students, faculty, and staff continue to embody the four charisms on which the school was founded: Mercy, Service, Justice, and Hospitality. This institution strives to educate students both inside and out of the classroom through enlightening courses, professional internships, extracurricular activities, clubs, and athletics. Today, Misericordia has expanded to 123 acres, with 34 degree programs and over 3,000 students.
The future of Misericordia will be bright! Your gift to the Misericordia Fund will ensure that students continue to become successful leaders in our communities. Your generosity, today, is an investment that will impact future generations. Alumni, parents, and friends of the University can join together to establish a stronger Misericordia Fund and innovative momentum as an institution.
